Children's Pastor

Highpoint Church
Aurora, Colorado, United States

Categories: Children's Ministry
Job Type: Full-Time
Employee Workplace: Unspecified
Job Description:

Highpoint is a vibrant church with the following qualities:

  • A growing church:  Highpoint is a growing church with two locations and two administrative offices in our city (Southlands area and Aurora’s urban corridor).  The church has an average combined attendance of over 750 weekly (up from 300 in 2012) with over 1,200 regular attendees.  The Children’s Ministry averages between 130 and 150 kids a week (birth to 5th grade) at the main campus.  Highpoint is an evangelical, Spirit-filled church with a current and minimalist focus on four core values.

(See http://www.highpointchurch.us/pages/page.asp?page_id=70476 for more information.)

  • Proven leadership:  Highpoint’s senior pastor has served the church for 15 years while previously having served as a denominational executive in California.  Pastor Gene Roncone is very engaged in community affairs, serves on key committees in our city, and has a strong focus on community outreach.  Pastor Roncone is an excellent leader who respects innovation, supports his staff, and helps them grow both as individuals and as staff pastors.
  • Amazing facilities:  Highpoint enjoys a new five-year-old facility with a 900-seat auditorium, atrium, dedicated children’s space, separate youth facility, administrative space, café, meeting rooms, and podcast studio.  The facilities have a modern design and look more like a performing arts center than a church.
  • Highly resourced.  Highpoint is prepared to provide a good salary that is commensurate with experience, creativity, and an ability to mobilize laity.  The church also provides financial support to the ministry, the best technology, and personal mobility for work devices.
  • Deep bench:  Highpoint has a highly collaborative team approach where staff focuses on key areas and yet overlaps in team initiatives.  The present full-time staff consists of a lead pastor, executive administrator, associate/youth pastor, associate/children’s pastor, outreach pastor over our urban children’s church, and office manager.  The part-time staff consists of a nursery coordinator and a bookkeeper.  Three out of the five members of the Highpoint pastoral staff have been lead pastors and worked in churches of over 1,000.
  • Growing city:  Aurora is a growing city with nearly 400,000 residents and is now the fifth largest suburb in America.  The city has several subcultures that make it unique and exciting.  These would include a booming affluent community in southeast Aurora, an urban corridor, an airport industry, a north and south highway/ train corridor, and an old growth region.  (See https://www.auroragov.org for more information.)

However, we feel there is one piece missing:  a dynamic children’s pastor!  That is why we are looking for a qualified children’s pastor capable of creating an exciting Children’s Ministry, growing volunteers, reaching kids in the community, and working in a high-paced team environment.

Highpoint Church

Children’s Pastor

The growth of Highpoint Church, our commitment to reach the immediate community surrounding our Southlands campus, and our passion for innovation have challenged us to employ a children’s pastor with the following portfolio:

A.    Why a children’s pastor?  Highpoint is seeking an innovative children’s pastor for the following reasons:

        1.   Relevance:  To assist the church in being relevant to the unique needs of children in the zip code of our primary campus (80016).

        2.   Discipleship:  To recognize the specific spiritual, emotional, and social needs of children and assist their parents in discipling them in a way that meets those needs.

        3.   Leadership:  To facilitate the administration and coordination of the various Children’s Ministries of our church’s present and future.

        4.   Outreach:  To facilitate our church’s vision to reach children in our immediate community.

B.    What are the qualifications the children’s pastor should have?  We believe effectiveness will require an individual with the following qualifications:

        1.   Character/Call:  One whose life is above reproach and reveals the call of God to ministry and spiritual effectiveness.

        2.   Collaborative:  One who has staff team skills, a history of collaboration, and can support the vision of our lead pastor.

        3.   Drive:  One who is a self-starter and desires to build ministries with a spirit of excellence, follow-through, and strategic focus.

        4.   Team growing:  One who enjoys recruiting, motivating, directing, and keeping volunteers.

        5.   Passion:  One who has a heartfelt burden for children and is deeply concerned with their spiritual welfare and development.

        6.   Intentional:  One who has administrative skills and the ability to bring long-term plans and strategy to the Children’s Ministries of the church.

        7.   Networker:  One who networks with other children’s leaders in the areas of training, resources, and benchmarking.

        8.   Tech savvy:  One who has an existing knowledge, use, and comfortability in Apple environments, wireless technology, cloud-based ministry applications, and social media.

C.    What are the responsibilities of the children’s pastor?  The responsibilities of the children’s pastor shall be to:

  1. 1.     Implement vision:  Cast vision and implement ministries to accomplish the following:
  • Community.  Create a unifying and churchwide sense of community for children.
  • Bible application.  Help children learn and live out God’s Word.
  • Outreach.  Mobilize children in local outreach opportunities.
  • Evangelism.  Reach unchurched children and families in ways that are strategically aligned with the unique culture of southeast Aurora.
  1. 2.     Lead ministries:  Provide effective leadership to the Children’s Ministry Team (CMT) by:
  • Giving executive leadership to all of Highpoint’s Children’s Ministries (birth through pre-teen).  This would include nursery, early childhood, Kids U (first hour Sunday school), and children’s church for various age groups (Highpoint Kids, Highpoint 123, and Highpoint 45).
  • Organizing communication platforms and team meetings of the Children’s Ministry volunteers.
  • Supervising and executing the church’s child protection policy, background checks, and online training.
  • Lead all public relations regarding Children’s Ministry (web site, social media, print, parent updates, and others).
  • Create an energetic “kids’ ministry consciousness” in the church with a spirit of excellence.  For example, the two glass walls of our nursery place that room in full view of those in the main atrium.  Therefore, it is vital that this room be clean, well-staffed, and visually appealing.  It is the first introduction our guests have to Highpoint’s Children’s Ministry.
  1. 3.     Lead volunteers:  Serve as the primary leader for all volunteers working in the Children’s Ministries of Highpoint Church.  This would include:
  • Regularly recruiting workers.  Serve as the primary recruiter in identifying potential workers, recruitment, and the formulation of brief job descriptions for all workers.
  • Training and coaching.  Establish a simple and convenient plan to provide ongoing training at least once a year or regular online availability.
  • Networking.  Networking with other Children’s Ministry leaders and organizations to benchmark and resource our volunteers.
  • Resourcing.  Resource our volunteers and empower them for excellence.

4.   Grow the ministry:  Grow the primary (Sunday morning) Children’s Ministry in proportion to the church.  If the church is growing, the Children’s Ministry should be growing at least at the same rate as the church.

5.   Communicate:  Maintain an open and honest line of communication with the lead pastor through monthly one-on-one meetings and a monthly report to keep the lead pastor informed of the spiritual pulse, activities, and developments of the Children’s Ministry portfolio.

6.   Be an example:  Maintain a dependable and responsible work ethic that is an example to the people of our church body through:

  • Keeping office hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. unless involved in outside ministry, counseling, outreach, or any other unique demands.
  • Arriving at least an hour early and being prepared for church services.
  • Arriving early, helping, and attending all-church events.  By all-church, we do not mean every event but events intended for the entire church body (i.e., Sunday morning worship services, holiday services, prayer meetings, and special events).
