Existence Church was birthed out of a vision to build an “inclusive, missional, community” that passionately follows Jesus in San Diego, CA. It all started in September of 2003. Three people moved across the country, started a small group, and eventually launched the church with a relentless devotion to this vision. Since that time Existence Church has watched hundreds of people make first time decisions to follow Jesus, engaged in service projects all across San Diego, partnered to make a difference globally, established an amazing vibrant community, and is now rooted in a beautiful facility with incredible potential. Existence is a mid-sized, multi-staffed, spiritually healthy, numerically growing church located in one of the most desired and influential areas of the country.

Today, Existence Church is a growing, elder guarded, staff guided, and church family gifted community that is committed to sharing the life changing truth of God’s Word in a relevant way. Moreover, we truly have created a culture of being an inclusive, missional, community. The church is primarily made up of young families full of creativity, an entrepreneurial spirit, diverse giftings, and a passion for making a difference. We have people of all ages and stages of life as well as robust and flourishing ministries for our next generation. Josh Hotsenpiller and Shawn Kennedy co-planted and led the church over the past fourteen years. Josh transitioned four years ago to start a tech company in the area, but still serves the church regularly and faithfully with his gifts of leadership and teaching. Shawn is partnering with Existence to replant a church in coastal Alabama where he grew up. The church is moving through the transition with gratitude and expectancy. As Existence Church prayerfully identifies the next leader God is calling to the church, they are optimistic and confident that the best days are yet to come.
Our Future Leader:
The next Lead Pastor will provide primary spiritual, visionary, and strategic leadership to Existence Church. The right candidate will be able to honor our history, build on our rich foundation, and lead us to an exciting new beginning full of new opportunities, and new impact. This individual will be an excellent communicator of God’s Word, a relational vision caster, and an exceptional team builder, who is passionate about healthy church growth that leads to
greater depth and greater width.
The right person will be comfortable working with high capacity leaders, value creativity and collaboration, and lead with vulnerability and boldness. The right candidate will demonstrate a deep prayer life and a proven commitment to help others know, love, and serve Jesus from a gospel centered perspective. The ideal candidate will have experiences in a transient community, a connection to Southern California, and a good measure of
theological training.
The prospective candidate will enter a staff culture that is authentic, values emotionally healthy spirituality, works hard, and knows how to have fun. They are high capacity, collaborative, and love to dream big. The staff also consists of talented and passionate teachers of God’s word.

Existence Church is located in the community of Rancho Bernardo in North County San Diego. San Diego is the seventh largest city in the US and is affectionately known as “America’s Finest City.” The population of San Diego is 1.3 million with over 3 million residing in the county. San Diego is an amazing city full of dreamers, innovators, and entrepreneurs from all across the country. The city is one of the most desired places to live not just in the US, but also in the world. San Diego is regularly listed as one of the nation's leading cities with least amount of people engaged in a local church. An estimated 700,000 people in San Diego are not a part of a church family and over 100,000 have never experienced a local church. The needs are great and the opportunity is great!
