Retail Store Manager Job Description

 

Primary Purpose:

 

The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership to the bookstore team so that the customers are served with excellence, the team is motivated and God is glorified.  This will require a commitment to the best business practices and the highest Christian values. 

 

Job Responsibilities

 

Sales and Marketing:

 

  • Meet or exceed budgeted sales goals for your store
  • Have a timely and effective implementation of monthly marketing catalog support – be sure that catalog items are in stock and properly displayed
  • Develop and implement in store events that maximize customer traffic and meet community needs
  • Consistently implement the CLC Reward Card program ensuring that staff are asking for this with every appropriate transaction
  • Work closely with local churches to understand and meet their unique needs
  • Successfully implement sales initiatives (e.g. post Thanksgiving Sale) to maximize customer traffic and sales
  • Spend at least 30% of your time on the sales floor mentoring your team and serving your customers

 

Customer Service:

 

  • Provide training to all staff on customer service expectations and on store policy and procedures
  • Monitor and mentor all staff to ensure that they are consistently providing the highest  levels of customer service to our customers
  • Have an effective special order system in place (primarily using Bookstore Manager) to ensure that special orders are handled in a timely fashion
  • Train staff to resolve customer disputes in a Godly and effective manner
  • Respond to unresolved customer complaints or comments in a timely fashion

 

Purchasing and Inventory Management:

 

  • Oversee purchasing for the store to ensure a high level of in stock and on hand quantities of core inventory items.
  • Monitor purchasing for the store so that Open to Buy (OTB) requirements are met and that purchasing is reduced when necessary
  • Have a process in place to ensure that best sellers by category and department are always on hand and in stock
  • Ensure that goods receiving is done in an efficient and effective manner with the goal of processing all incoming items the same day
  • Implement a process to ensure the integrity of the inventory data in the system of regular departmental cycle counts.
  • Ensure data capture of materials that requested but out of stock.

 

 

Spiritual and Ministry Leadership:

 

  • Lead morning devotional and prayer session (15 minutes before the work day starts)
  • Ensure that staff are adhering to CLC principles and ministry objectives
  • Pray for your staff and CLC worldwide on a regular basis
  • Seek out ministry opportunities for you and your team to support the community (book tables, etc.)

 

Personnel:

 

  • Interview, hire and train all new employees
  • Conduct annual performance reviews
  • Provide ongoing training and development
  • Maintain an awareness of market trends and local competitors and update staff on pertinent issues, new initiatives and on business performance through regular staff meetings
  • Create and monitor monthly staffing schedule
  • Ensure that the store is properly staffed at all times
  • Resolve interpersonal team conflicts
  • Respond to requests for time off in a timely manner
  • Administer disciplinary measures as necessary
  • Motivate team to maximum performance through mentoring and coaching

 

Finance:

 

  • Monitor and implement OTB in conjunction with Director of Finance (DOF)
  • Monitor controllable expenses and stay within approved budget
  • Reduce spending as necessary based on sales and input from DOF
  • Evaluate monthly profit and loss statements and adjust plans in order to meet budgeted financial expectations
  • Run a profitable store

 

 

 

Administrative:

 

  • Ensure that banking is done daily and that deposits are made daily
  • Complete sales and revenue spreadsheet on a daily basis, turn in to accounting office on a weekly basis
  • Be sure that all necessary Bookstore Manager reports are run daily
  • Approve and process all invoices for your store – this can be delegated to other team members, but must be approved by you.  Invoices must be turned in weekly to the accounting office
  • Be sure that all end of month Bookstore Manager Reports are run and turned into the accounting office.
  • Resolve health, safety, legal and security issues

 

Store Appearance:

  • Ensure maximum cleanliness at all times – store should be vacuumed and shelves dusted daily
  • Minimize clutter and maximize effective merchandizing presentations of our products – aisles should be kept clean and uncluttered during open hours
  • Lead by example in keeping the store attractive and fresh

 

Requirements:

 

  • Loves reading and recommending books
  • Previous supervisory and team leadership experience
  • Retail Store management experience
  • College degree in a relevant area of study
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of programs

 

Preferred:

 

  • Previous Christian Retail experience
  • Extensive knowledge of Christian books and authors
