About Calvary Church
At Calvary, our mission is to honor God in all things. Our vision is to be a multicultural movement of mature, glad-hearted followers of Jesus Christ, deeply embracing life while living out our discipleship in the world. Calvary is an urban congregation, ministering to people from all walks of life. Church ministries include:
Stemming from our belief that a central theme of scripture is hospitality, we love to gather for church meals and retreats, and to invite our neighborhood to use our facility for community forums, theatre presentations, and other gatherings. We host the most meetings for Narcotics Anonymous in the city. Every Saturday we host our neighborhood Farmer’s Market.
The current staff consists of 6 people, primarily part-time staff, under the leadership of Jeff Cowmeadow, who has been the senior pastor of Calvary for almost 29 years.
The growing Calvary community is ready for the next season of deepening development, growing discipleship, and ensuring diversity, and we are looking for an Associate Pastor who is eager to come alongside us--drawing out and developing our gifts.
Our ideal candidate
The Associate Pastor will work alongside the Senior Pastor, staff and body of Calvary in order to further our discipleship in Christ for the transformation of our hearts, love of our neighbors, and love for God. The successful candidate for this role will be a strong builder of both people and processes. The Associate Pastor will be responsible for development and coaching of paid ministry staff and should have experience with general management of day-to-day church operations. They will build a sustainable leadership pipeline that not only disciples people, but also equips and raises the next generation of leaders in the church. This role places an emphasis on enabling the Senior Pastor to focus on teaching, vision-casting, and neighborhood engagement.
This will be a new role for Calvary, with a clear vision articulated by the congregation and Elders, but with opportunity to develop the role. This individual will play a significant shaping role in the future and ministries of Calvary, by working with the Elders to create and launch a Deacon lay team and developing new programs to connect members and neighbors into adult ministries and small groups for the purpose of discipleship and outreach. Moreover, they will act as an integrator who maps the full wealth of resources, gifts, and talents in the congregation and provides a structure to pool those resources for the work of the Kingdom.
We are looking for someone who is passionately committed to building on and celebrating the socioeconomic and ethnic diversity that is our identity at Calvary. We seek someone with experience in an urban church and a demonstrated ability to constructively navigate and appreciate differences. We are looking for someone who loves people, values diversity, and is committed to leading people to deeper relationship with Jesus.
The successful candidate must be a ‘strategist,’ solution-oriented, and a self-starter capable of turning ideas into action. The person will have a bias for action and ability to help to effectively lead through change.
An undergraduate degree is required. An advanced degree is preferred. Applicants of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
About our community
Since the church’s inception in 1883 as a mission to serve with Scandinavian immigrant neighbors, God has used the location of Calvary to shape the church’s identity.
The Whittier neighborhood still remains a vibrant center of immigrant life with residents from East Africa, Latin America, and many countries in Asia.
Whittier is economically diverse as well, and has the highest percentage of transitional and supportive housing in the Twin Cities. At the same time, our neighborhood is close to downtown and other more upscale neighborhoods, and the character of the neighborhood is quickly evolving. We believe we are called to be good neighbors to the whole community during this period, to protect the vulnerable, and be welcoming to old and new residents. We are seeking to thoughtfully and meaningfully engage the neighborhood during this season.
Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota, at the heart of a metro area of 3.5 million people with its sister city of St. Paul. It is a growing and vibrant city, home to many cultural institutions, professional sports franchises, and an abundance of lakes. We make the most of the outdoors, with glorious summers, an impressive ability to enjoy the snow, and one of the best parks systems in the country. It's a fantastic blend of accessible city amenities and livable, friendly neighborhoods.
