Job Description:

 

This position is at the intersection of staff, programming and the congregation.  The primary focus of this role is to effectively provide two-way communication from the church office to the congregation and to enhance the overall marketing and visibility within the wider community. The Director of Communications & Design (DOCD) is responsible for coordinating and implementing all aspects of running a comprehensive communications department inclusive of graphic design. They operate as a “press secretary” for the pastoral staff and elder board by communicating the vision, mission and identity of the church as evidenced in her programs and ministries.    

 

Expectations:

 

The DOCD is expected to work independently and collectively to complete multiple, complex projects with minimal supervision and within aggressive deadlines. It is expected that the DOCD have extensive experience in graphic design and layout, be proficient in writing and proof reading copy for print and web publications. The DOCD is expected to be comfortable writing, soliciting, editing and producing all aspects of church communication via print, web and verbal. Excellent judgment is expected when engaged with potentially sensitive interactions with church congregants, Elder Board and other audiences. The ability to be a consummate team player is essential.

 

Duties:


GRAPHIC DESIGN

 

Must be professionally competent in InDesign & Photoshop. Responsible for layout and design of Sunday bulletins, Sunday banners, quarterly events magazine, posters, flyers and occasional web graphics. Professional graphic design skills are called upon on a daily basis in this position.


WEB MANAGEMENT

 

Maintain basic web content to ensure that time sensitive information remains up to date. Knowl­edge of web content management systems such as Dreamweaver and Contribute helpful.

 

Responsible for maintaining web calendar of events. Knowledge of basic calendar management systems helpful (iCal, Outlook).

 

Manage social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter), podcasts and blogs with the intentions of solidifying and building enthusiasm for church values/mission and as a means to further promote events.

 

Serve as liaison between staff and external web design vendor for upcoming web redesign project. Project management skills key.

 

COMMUNICATIONS & COORDINATION

 

Gather information from staff, congregation members, ministry partners and various community sources to effectively disseminate church announcements/info via web, print, email and verbal com­munication mediums.

 

Manage email marketing efforts (Constant Contact knowledge preferable). Gather content for weekly e-news, format e-newsletter on weekly basis to adjust to content, manage group lists.

 

Serve as primary coordinator of office-to-congregation/community communications.

 

Events and projects: Share the overall responsibility for the planning and execution of seasonal events and special projects.  Plan theme and message, create schedules, tasks, assignments and budget, solicit volunteers, convene committees and meetings as needed.

 

Head up in-house, communications-related improvement projects as needed.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Experience: A preferred candidate would have a Bachelors degree in art, graphic design, project management, public relations or a related communications field.  2-3 years’ experience with website management or design is preferred.  The candidate should have strong organizational and interpersonal skills to plan and coordinate the work of volunteers and staff, create production schedules and keep to tight timetables. The qualified individual will be comfortable and experienced in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator are all required). Comfortable using both pc & mac operating systems. Proven project management skills with the ability to properly space work projects, set timetables and accomplish them. Comfortable writing and editing print and web marketing content.    

 

Leadership Skills: The ideal candidate would be a self-starter who is ideally comfortable in the environment and language of the church. The candidate is expected to be comfortable writing, soliciting, editing and producing all aspects of church communication via print, web and verbal.

 

Active Listener/ Humble Learner:  The DOCD should not only be a strong leader but also an energetic listener and life-long learner.      

 

Administrative skills: The DOCD must possess strong organization and administration abilities and cope well with changing needs in the daily and weekly schedule.

 

Accountabilities:  The DOCD will report directly to the Executive Pastor and is also subject to the leadership and direction of the Director of Worship & the Arts and Senior Pastor.  This position is created to be a synergistic support to the overall ministry provided at LaSalle Street Church.
