Job Description:

Regnery Publishing, the nation’s leading publisher of conservative books, is seeking a Managing Editor who will help guide every aspect of book production with the company.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assign projects to copy editors

 

  • Create production schedules

 

  • Run weekly production meetings

 

  • Work with printers on deadlines

 

  • Monitor checklists for editorial styles and quality control

 

  • Support editors and copy editors as needed

 

  • Maintain the editorial calendar, production grid, and department book files
  • Assist in the editorial department's hiring process: send copy editing tests with instructions to candidates, then grade tests and interview candidates
  • Train and manage copy editors and interns
  • Serve as the liaison with HR for all editorial staffing and freelance request, including job descriptions, freelance contracts, getting W-9s for freelancers, timesheet sign-offs, conducting performance reviews, etc.
  • Manage relationships with freelancers
  • Create the annual editorial budget for all imprints
  • Process department invoices and work with accounting on advance payments to authors
  • Handle Library of Congress registrations: fill out  application paperwork, send in required physical book copies, answer any questions, file certificates, update spreadsheet of registration records, etc.
  • Send cataloging-in-publication data book copies to Library of Congress
  • Process reprints: work with sales, production, and design to track down files for previously published books, make decisions on and implement any necessary changes/updates for the new edition, sign off on all final print-ready files and printer proofs
  • Guide authors through the production process, get jacket approvals, and assist wherever needed with photo research, fact-checking, working on book jackets, quality control, signing off on printer proofs, creation of Advance Reader Copies, etc.

·        Strong interpersonal skills

·        Stamina for long hours

·        Coolness under deadline pressure

·        Superior attention to detail

·        Previous editorial experience

·        Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
